Salamander is the spirit of the fire and its incarnation according to medieval beliefs and magic. People believed that salamanders were living in any open fire. Very often it was described as the little lizard. Some people even consider salamander to be the special substance of the fire.

According to the Vedic traditions the rebirth of the world passes during the birth of the fire during the winter solstice and is thought to be the new creation. The putting out of fires during the New Year puts the end to all existing forms that became bad during the year and prepares the place for the new ones.

The play of the flame tips became the image of the conception of the saint creative playing. In Buddhism the thoughts about the fire were reflected in understanding of nirvana and the existing itself. By the way the word "nirvana" is translated as "to put out the flame of life".

The cult of the fire at first was the incarnation of the god justice Atar. Later it got the additional meaning in asterism being its main element. For the followers of asterism the fire is the saint element and the incarnation of the saint justice. The cult of the fire is still practiced in India. In their temples the fire is kept by the priest. The fire is brought to the new temples from the old ones. The fire of the hearth is not carried out from the house. In the morning all members of the family pray to the god of the fire and sacrifice the sandalwood to him. These people are called Parsee.

Parsees don't recognise the cremation as well as the burial in the earth as the similar use of the fire may profane the saint element. Heraclit depicts the fire as the base of everything and it gives birth to everything. It is the negotiator between all forms that appear and disappear. The fire is the symbol of rebirth like water.
