Salamander and fire

Salamander is the spirit of the fire and its incarnation according to medieval beliefs and magic. People believed that salamanders were living in any open fire. Very often it was described as the little lizard. Some people even consider salamander to be the special substance of the fire.
According to legends sometimes it is able to put out the fire with the coldness of its body. The appearance of salamander in the fire usually doesn't predict anything bad but it also doesn't promise anything good. From the point of view of its influence on the people's destiny this creature can be called neutral.
In some ancient books the look of salamander is described as the creature with the body of the young cat and with wings on its back similar to the wings of some dragons. It also had the tail that reminded the snake's tail. The head of this creature was similar to the head of the simple lizard. The skin of salamander was covered with the little scale from the substation similar to asbestos. The breathing of this creature has the poisoned qualities and could kill any animal of little sizes.
Very often it can be met near the volcano or during the volcanic eruption. It also appears in the flame of the fire if it wants to do that. It is considered that the appearance of the heat on earth without this creature is impossible. Without the permission of this creature even the match can't be set to fire.
The medieval alchemists considered this creature to be the spirit and the soul of the fire. They really believed that the body of salamander consists of the hardened pieces of the ancient flame.
